Pre K/Kindergarten home
ABC’S Of Kindergarten
For Parents
Attendance: The school office records absences. Please send a note explaining why your child is absent.
Behavior: Teachers will send home a behavior plan the first day of school explaining expectations. Your child will have a folder that needs to be signed each night and returned to school. There will be a calendar that will show your child’s behavior for the day, please initial each day.
Change of clothes: Please keep a change of clothes in your child’s backpack in case of accidents.
Dismissal: Our bell rings at 3:20 and we leave the building using the NW doors and sit on the benches in front. Please stress to your child the importance of telling the teacher “goodbye” and pointing to where their parent is located and not running to where their parent/or ride is.
Email: Please email any questions/concerns that you may have to your child’s teacher. Please note that we check email during our conference time in the afternoon.

Food: Your child should get a lunch menu the first of each month in their folder. They will make a choice in the morning of what they want to eat and then will need to pick that item up as we go through the lunch line. If your child is a “picky” eater, it may be best to send a sack lunch. We will have an afternoon snack each day.
Good-bye: Saying good-bye is often hard on kindergarteners—our counselor will be in and out of our rooms the first weeks of school to attend to those who need it. We do ask that parents leave when the tardy bell rings at 8:10 because we will be starting our class at that time.
Homework: Reading is always recommended and students will have notes in their folder when the time comes.
Illness: Please call the school if your child is sick and you keep them home.
Just let us know: …Any special needs or concerns you have about your child.
Kindergarten: Is very important, we are helping your child to become independent, to learn routines, and to give them a foundation for their future.
Lunch: Your child will have a 3 digit pin number to enter at the end of the lunch line. Please help them practice it and you can use it to enter money into their accounts. (Teachers will give you the number ASAP).
Money: Any money that you send to school needs to marked with your child’s name, teacher, and what it is for. A good place to put it is in your child’s folder because teachers will check that at the beginning of each school day.
Newsletter: We will send home a newsletter to let you know about events, academics, and announcements.
Office: School Office #972-642-0448
Progress Reports: After the first nine weeks, we will schedule a whole day of parent conferences to discuss your child’s progress. The following nine weeks, we will send home a paper progress report.
Questions: Please remind your child that school is new and a big change. Let them know to raise their hand to let their teacher know if they don’t understand something, or if they need to use the bathroom, or if they don’t feel good.
Reading for Rewards: Your child will get to attend a reward party for reading their library book. Students will go to the library everyday, (as schedules allow) if a parent signs their reading chart in their folder.
Schedule: Teachers will send home a copy of their schedule. We teach English Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, and Science. Your child will go to Art, Music, and PE on a rotating schedule. Your child will go to the computer lab and library weekly-as time permits. You will be amazed at how much your child will learn in their first year at Zavala!!
Tardy bell: The tardy bell rings at 8:10. If your child is not in the room at this time, they will need to go to the office to get a tardy slip. The district does keep track of this, so please do your best to be on time.
Understand the rules: Teachers will spend a lot of time explaining the rules to students and giving reminders the first week of school. We do expect students to learn and follow the rules so that our classrooms are a safe and productive environment for learning for all students. (Rules will be sent home the first day of school.)
Volunteers: Notes will be sent home the first week of school. Please let us know if you would like to help out in any way: each room will need a room parent to help with parties, etc. Volunteers that help with students will need to pass a background check.
Welcome: Some of you are “new” faces and some have been to Zavala before, we welcome you all to this year of kindergarten.
X: eXtra notes or information will always be put in your child’s folder. It is very important to sign the folder every night and take out your child’s work and notes.
Your child’s snack: Teachers will send home a snack calendar to let you know when it is your turn to provide snacks for the class. We just have a small amount of time that is allotted for snack time, so please send something easy to pass out and clean-up. Some examples: Goldfish, vanilla wafers, fruit snacks…or something that is individually packaged is also easy too. Please no drinks---we just go to the water fountain. (Please no candy, chips, or spicy snacks.)
Zavala Lions: We are excited to meet your child and we know we will have an excellent school year!!!
